If two runners cover a mile in the same amount of time, then
they have the same average speed during that time. 
We don't know anything about their velocity, because they
may have followed different routes, or run a mile in completely
opposite directions.  We don't know.

"Velocity" is not just a high-class word for "speed".  Even though
they're related, they are two different things.
