That's strange. (3)(415) isn't exactly done with distributive property.

   3(415)
= 3(400+15)
= 1200 + 45
= 1245

So it's just breaking down the numbers...

Rewrite 3 ( 4 1/15) as 3 ( 4 + 1/5 ) . Distribute the 3 to get 3(4) +3 (  1/5) . Multiply to get 12 +  3/5 . Then add to get 12 3/5.
