A rectangular garden is four times as long as it is wide. Let w represent the width of the garden. Write two equivalent expressions that represent the area of the garden. Justify your answer. Please help I just don't understand what the problem is asking for.

so basically you're just using variables! There are two ways of saying this problem: The width of the garden is a fourth of the length than the length or the original. In other words, if you drew a rectangle

     

W ||   you would label it length and width, or L and W

      L

With this new information you could either label it

           

1/4L ||   or    

            L

       

W ||  

        4W

and you would still get the same area because you're writing the expression in terms of the other variable in question

So the equivalent expressions would be 4WxW or 1/4LxL
