x =4.

Step-by-step explanation:

Given  : 2x − y = 11  and x + 3y = −5.

To find : What is the x-value in the solution to this system of linear equations.

Solution : We have given

2x − y = 11  (1)

x + 3y = −5 (2).

On subtracting both sides by 3y from equation 2

x = -5 -3y.

Now , plug the values of x = -5 -3y in equation 1.

2 ( -5 - 3y ) -y = 11.

-10 - 6y - y = 11.

-10 - 7y = 11.

On adding both sides by 10.

- 7y = 11 + 10.

-7y = 21.

On dividing both sides by -7

y = -3.

Now, plug y = -3 in x = -5 -3y .

x = - 5 - 3 ( -3) .

x = -5 + 9.

x = 4 .

Therefore, x =4.
