In the second paragraph of Dr. King’s speech he says “the life of a Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination.” These words bring up strong images of slavery. Why would this be an effective method of moving his audience?

Racism towards African Americans was very high in this time period and even though they were free from slavery they were still treated like slaves.
